Amethyst is a member of the quartz family. Its color varies from pale to deep purple depending on the trace amounts of iron and aluminum, plus natural or applied irradiation. Amethyst has been prized for thousands of years. Neolithic people in Europe used it at least as early as 25,000 B.C.
