Bloodstone is the traditional birthstone of March.
Bloodstone is a green chalcedony with inclusions of iron oxide (jasper). The inclusions can be pink, orange-red or red areas and specks. Bloodstones are found in India (primarily), China, Brazil, Australia, Czech Republic, Russia and the United States. There is also an outcrop of bloodstone on the Isle of Rum in Scotland.
Bloodstone is also known as heliotrope from the Greek word helios for Sun turner.
The ancient Greeks valued the bloodstone as a light-bringing precious stone which, because of its green colour, symbolised life on Earth, while the red spots embodied the blood of the Earth.
